They say that each day you learn something new – and not to judge a book by its cover.

Both apply to this typical farmhouse. I knew what to expect from the outside, or so I thought. But the surprises were all inside, and nice. The kitchen is an unusual shape, but fully fitted and modern in appearance with bright tiles and a sunny feel. Off the kitchen is the very modern “wet room” shower – with his and hers showerheads – I am used to seeing “his and her” wash-basins but this was new to me and ultra-modern in style and finish. There is also room to install a bath if wanted. Turn left from the kitchen and you are back in a French farmhouse dining room, definitely the most important room in the house and with such a large dining table it is possible to visualise those family meals enjoyed over time. This is a lovely room and leads to the “front” entrance of the house with hallway before stepping into the large lounge with imposing fireplace, oak beams and a slightly odd shape. You feel this house was built to fill the plot rather then a rectangle placed there.

Upstairs however is “unfinished” and although there are three bedrooms with the possibility of two more, low beams and a bathroom are still to be overcome and built. However it has served well for many years as a holiday home in its current configuration, and served well. A door from the attic takes you onto the roof terrace, a real suntrap and wonderful barbeque area. Attached to the house is the barn, now utilised as a large garage workshop and gym area. There is also a boiler/utility room and wood-store. The garden is to the front mainly down to trees and grass with flowing shrubs. The large field is maintained by the local farmer, but affords lovely countryside views.

Set in a small village it is a short drive to the village of Saint Sauvant or the pretty town of Lusignan. It is about 30 minutes drive to the city of Poitiers with all that has to offer with theatre, cinemas, street café life and good restaurants plus the TGV links to Paris and London and an airport with Ryanair flights to and from the UK. ©
