The house that smiles seems a very appropriate local name for this lovely impressive village house. Everything about it shouts quality, affection and care, as it looks out over the valley.

From the courtyard entrance you step into the kitchen/diner with white painted oak beams, stone fireplace, wood-burning stove and chestnut planked flooring with a mix of fixed and freestanding kitchen units. The heart of the house. The door from the kitchen takes you into the central hallway, with stone flagged floor and magnificent front door. There is a storage cupboard under the beautifully built staircase - oak or elm - I'm not sure. Opposite the kitchen is the living room, again with white painted oak beams, fireplace with insert wood-burning stove and white tiled flooring. On the first floor there are two double bedrooms and a family bathroom off the landing. One bedroom has an en-suite shower room, although this bedroom is currently used as an office. Again stairs take you up to the attic which has been converted to provide two further large bedrooms.

The good feeling extends to the outside into the suntrap courtyard, with shrubs and flowerbeds, the attached barn, which serves as garage and wood store, and stables provide further storage space. There is a separate small building which was an artist's studio, and it is easy to see why. The land rises gently away from the house and to one side is the old cottage which pre-dates the house and probably a lot of the village - with its pre-revolution fireplace and sewing window seat this could be converted into a studio giîte if needed. The garden is a gardener's paradis full of fruit trees of every type, shrubs flowers and grass - a haven to lose time in.

The village of Chatain has a small general store. Sat above the valley of the Charente river it also has an ancient pack-horse bridge. It is a short drive to the village of Charroux with a range of shops and services, or Champagne Mouton, Civray, Savigné and Ruffec are all close by for more. There is a street market in one of these small towns on different days of the week. Poitiers and Limoges with their low-cost flights, city culture and wider range of shops are under 1 hour's drive away. ©
